The Met Office - the UK’s National Weather Service formed in 1854 is located in Exeter in the county of Devon. It became part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy following the merger of Business Innovation and Skills and the Department of Energy and Climate Change on the 14 July 2016.

Pollution forecast provided by The Met Office

The UK Daily Air Quality Index tells you about levels of air pollution and provides recommended actions and health advice. The index is numbered 1-10 and divided into four bands, low (1) to very high (10) to provide detail about air pollution levels in a simple way similar to the sun index or pollen index.

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and are important sources of morbidity and mortality.

Air pollution is even more dangerous than previously thought the World Health Organisation has warned as it slashes maximum safe levels of key pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide.

Air Pollution in the UK Report  2024 - Published September 2025

The report, together with the family of UK Air Quality websites (UK-AIR, Air Quality in Scotland, the Welsh Air Quality Forum website and Air Quality in Northern Ireland) provides the most comprehensive and complete analytical picture of UK's air pollution during 2024.

A University of Liverpool study of air pollution in the UK during the first 100 days of lock-down has revealed that whilst nitrogen oxide levels were cut by half, levels of sulphur dioxide increased by over 100%.

Monitoring air pollution levels is the key to adopting implementing WHO’s Global Air Quality Guidelines.
